Monitoring violence

Article Abstract:

Staff from the Phoenix Unit, Springfield Hospital, London, England have conducted an inquiry into violence in psychiatric units. The causes, nature and management of violent incidents were recorded between September 1990 and May/June 1991. Results showed most violence occurred between patients. They established possible causes such as anxiety or over-stimulation. They identified potentially violent situations and facilitated a strategy for response. Monitoring incidents resulted in a reduction of violence.

Monitoring sickness and absence in the workplace

Article Abstract:

Employers can undertake pre-placement screening to assess an applicant's ability to do the job for which they have applied. Screening can be undertaken using a simple questionnaire or a psychological assessment and applicants should be informed of the nature and risk of the job. Absenteeism from work is the focus of attention in many companies and many short and long term sicknesses will require occupational health input.

Monitoring post-operative effects in day-surgery patients

Article Abstract:

A survey of the post-operative effects of herniorrhaphy in a day surgical unit, revealed that although those patients given diclofenac sodium and bupivacaine hydrochloride did not show reduced post-operative pain, they did have a smaller recovery time. Discussion of pain before the operation was found to reduce levels of anxiety. A second survey is underway to cover the pain and effects experienced on discharge.
