Most nursing homes fall short of new standards

Article Abstract:

The US Health Care Financing Administration inspectors found that 73% of nursing homes audited since Jul 1, 1995, do not comply with the tougher standards imposed upon the facilities. Penalties will not be imposed until Oct 1, 1995. Penalties could reach $10,000 per day fines for those facilities that continue to operate below the standards. Only 8% of those nursing homes that were substandard during the first inspection were still substandard during the second inspection.

Alcohol dependence a growing problem for women

Article Abstract:

Alcohol abuse and dependence are on the rise among women. Medical experts estimate that 10% of all adult women under the age of 30 have an alcohol abuse disorder. Alcohol abuse has been linked to early menopause, increased risk for fertility and menstrual disorders, physical abuse, HIV infection and social stigmatism. Antidepressants, such as desipramine, are often prescribed to treat diagnosable depression in alcoholics.
