Moving closer

Article Abstract:

The palliative care and symptom control clinic in Wigtown, Scotland, is so successful that it is giving rise to other similar clinics in the area. The aims of the clinic are to provide help for patients in need of physical, emotional and spiritual support, to counsel relatives of the cancer patient and the bereaved, and to advise or educate any member of staff who is caring for terminally ill cancer patients. The centre was set up to provide a local service for people in this remote area of Scotland and it is hoped that similar clinics will be set up at other remote sites.

Colorectal cancer: diagnosis and treatment

Article Abstract:

It is important to involve family members in discussions about different methods of treatment for patients with colorectal cancer. Family support can make all the difference to the confidence of patients who may have to undergo radical surgery and continue living the rest of their life with a stoma. Classification of bowel cancer stages can be carried out using the Duke's system, which grades cancers on a spreading level. Up to 28,000 people are diagnosed as having bowel cancer in the UK each year.
