Mr Brown cuts the cake

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown delivered good news to nurses through his early budget in 1998. The issue of child care was addressed by the introduction of a tax credit which will allow parents on family credit to claim up to 70% of child care costs for the first child. Moves will also be made to allow parents to take unpaid leave to look after children. Family credit is to be increased by 20%, while those on less than 220 pounds sterling a week will no longer have to pay tax.

Nothing like a Dame

Former nurse executive Sarah Mullally has been appointed as the new UK chief nursing officer by former health secretary Frank Dobson. Mullally is a mother of two young children and has fifteen years experience in the field of nursing, although no civil service experience, which has caused some concern in government circles. Mullally claims her aim in the new role is to ensure a high standard of training and on-going education for nurses.

Nothing to be sneezed at

Article Abstract:

The NHS Direct telephone advice line is thought to have been a success in reducing the number of admissions to Accident and Emergency departments or visits to the GP. The service is available across 65% of England, with plans to start up in Scotland and Wales shortly. NHS Direct is thought to have been particularly helpful during the flu epidemic.
