Mycobacterial virulence and specialized secretion: Same story, different ending

Article Abstract:

The dissection of the components of a newly discovered secretion system conserved among gram-positive bacteria has revealed a unique Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific signal for export of bacterial proteins into the host. The data has provided an explanation of how Mycobacterium tuberculosis has evolved a novel use for a conserved secretory apparatus.

Identification of a hormonal basis for gall bladder filling

Article Abstract:

The way in which fibroblast growth factor-15, a hormone created by the distal small intestine in response to bile acids is needed for gall bladder filling is described. It is suggested that the postprandial timing mechanism is required that controls gall bladder motility as the filling of the gall bladder is actively regulated by an endocrine pathway.

Streptococcus moves inward

Article Abstract:

A wide spectrum of group A streptococcal (GAS) causes mysterious and uncomplicated diseases from benign strep throat to 'flesh-eating' wound infections. The GAS virulence depends on arrays of secreted and surface proteins that retard innate defenses, mimic host macromolecules and derange adaptive immunological responses.
