Think Medicare pay is low? HMOs are starting to pay less
Article Abstract:
Some managed care plans and health maintenance organizations are paying physicians fees lower than Medicare's rates, according to a study by Medirisk Inc. In areas with an abundant supply of physicians, such as Orlando, FL, and Washington, DC, payments are much lower than Medicare averages, especially for treatment of the aged. Competition among doctors may further erode payment scales, according to analysts.

Moving Medicare into the marketplace: AMA backs patient-choice plan, in tune with Republicans
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) House of Delegates has approved an outline that would restructure Medicare along free-market lines. The plan, which reflects the approach favored by Congressional Republicans, would institute a fixed per-beneficiary federal contribution, thus capping federal contributions, and would allow beneficiaries to choose from among various coverage options.
