Necrotizing Enterocolitis in a Term Infant

Article Abstract:

The presence of air in the intestines detectable on abdominal x-rays may indicate necrotizing enterocolitis in the newborn. A 48-hour-old infant developed a distended abdomen, hyperactive bowel sounds, and vomited bile. Necrotizing enterocolitis is a severe inflammatory intestinal disease which presents symptoms similar to those of a perforated intestine. X-ray examination will reveal regions of air and fluid characteristic of enterocolitis. Antibiotics and gastric decompression generally resolve this condition.

Beliefs About Papanicolaou Smears and Compliance With Papanicolaou Smear Follow-up in Adolescents

Article Abstract:

Pediatricians need to educate their female patients about the importance of getting a Pap smear to detect cervical cancer. Three focus groups of teenage girls said their knowledge about Pap smears was inadequate. They perceived the importance of Pap smears but listed barriers such as pain and discomfort, embarrassment, fear, poor communication with their doctor, or advice from their peers. Telephone and written reminders could help them to keep an appointment to get a Pap smear.
