New causes for new diseases

Article Abstract:

Human activity is responsible for the transmission of some diseases. Poorly maintained air-conditioning systems can transmit Legionnaires' disease, while children in day-care centers transmit diseases such as colds and more serious infections. Global warming also affects disease transmission.

A checklist of hazards

Article Abstract:

Rural water users can inspect supplies themselves at the village level by following a simple pictorial checklist. The checklist has been pilot tested in Thailand and Indonesia, and both sanitary inspectors and villagers have responded favorably.

Clean water at low cost

Article Abstract:

Many appropriate technology projects have been undertaken in Africa to provide rural populations with potable water sources. Gravity feed supply has served villagers in the Congo well, as has rainwater collection.
