Nowhere to go: The prospect of steady career progression is as important as pay and conditions and affects recruitment and retention, yet the grading system has failed to deliver its promise of rewarding nurses fairly
Article Abstract:
The clinical grading structure for nursing was introduced 15 years ago and was seen as a way of rewarding nurses who remained in clinical practice rather than moving into management. However clinical grading has acted as a straitjacket for nurses, with evidence that nurses' career progression is being blocked in the lower grades and at higher levels. The grading system is to be discussed as part of a consultation exercise.
