Nurses get the credit as waiting list measures begin to bite

Article Abstract:

UK nurses can take some of the credit for the fact that the National Health Service is reducing its waiting lists. The waiting list task forces in England and Scotland both have nurses on their teams, and nurse-led schemes form many of the bids for finance available to reduce waiting lists. One of the nurses from a task force encourages nurses to think about how they can use their skills to provide services which make effective use of finances and professional time, whilst reducing waiting lists and improving levels of patient care.

Pay: it's us against them

Article Abstract:

UK nurses will not receive substantial pay increases in 1998 because of a lack of finance available, according to National Health Service (NHS) managers. The nursing profession is being damaged by nurses demanding pay increases, despite receiving very small pay rises since 1996. The government has allocated an extra 21 million pounds sterling to the NHS, although managers claim the money has already been committed for projects, such as hospital modernization.
