Office-based training in tobacco cessation for dental professionals

Article Abstract:

A program designed to educate dentists about how to educate their smoking patients appears to be effective. Intervention strategies used by 293 dentists with their smoking patients were evaluated before and after attending a 90-minute smoking education seminar. Three months after the seminar dentists reported asking their patients about tobacco use more frequently and were more inclined to help their patients quit smoking. Survey responses indicated that an average of eight patients per practice had considered stopping and two per practice had successfully quit smoking.

Patient perceptions of tobacco cessation services in dental offices

Article Abstract:

More dentists should provide smoking cessation advice to their patients. Smoking is a risk factor for periodontitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Researchers asked 52 dental offices and 3,088 dental patients whether they thought a dentist should offer smoking cessation advice. More than half the patients believed dentists should provide that information, but 62% of the dentists believed they should not. Many dentists believed patients do not want this information, but the survey of patients indicates that they do.
