Opposing views on health care assistants
Article Abstract:
A study reveals that nursing trainers, senior education managers and senior nurses have a positive view of health care assistants (HCAs), in contrast to the negative view held by clinical teachers and tutors. The study was mainly based on 59 nurse educationists in a college in the West Midlands, UK, and six National Health Service (NHS) Training Department trainers. Out of the educationists, 24 thought they had 'medium' awareness of the implementation of HCAs, while two trainers knew a great deal. More than half the educationists thought that HCA skills affected the nursing role, as opposed to none of the trainers. The view that HCAs should dress wounds or undertake other nursing procedures was held by two-thirds of educationists, while two trainers thought HCAs should.

Friend or foe?: The annual debate looms once again, will the RCN allow health care assistants to join its ranks or will it persist with an all-professional membership
Article Abstract:
The RCN annual Congress will again debate proposals to allow health care assistants to joint its ranks. Members have been asked eight times over the past 10 years to admit health care support workers. The role of health care assistants is already exceeding its original scope, and nurses see them as a threat to their position. The nursing profession could take a controlling role in regulating and developing health care assistants if they were recognized as part of the nursing workforce.
