Oral fingolimod (FTY720) for relapsing multiple sclerosis

Article Abstract:

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, proof-of-concept clinical study is conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fingolimod (FTY 720), an oral immunomodulating agent for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis. Results suggest that fingolimod reduces the number of lesions detected on MRI and clinical disease activity in patients with multiple sclerosis, but larger-scale, longer-term clinical studies are necessary for further evaluation of its benefits and risks.

Prognostic significance of autoimmunity during treatment of melanoma with interferon

Article Abstract:

The prognostic significance of autoimmunity in patients with stage IIB, IIC, or III melanoma who were treated with high-dose adjuvant interferon alfa-2b is assessed. The appearance of autoantibodies or clinical manifestations of autoimmunity during the treatment with interferon alfa-2b is associated with statistically significant improvements in relapse-free survival and overall survival in patients with melanoma.
