Outbreak of Hendra-Like Virus--Malaysia and Singapore, 1998-1999

Article Abstract:

A previously unknown virus appears to be responsible for outbreaks of an illness in Malaysia. Between September 29, 1998 and April 4, 1999, 229 cases of encephalitis were reported to the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH). Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain. Extensive investigations revealed that most of those who became ill had been in close contact with pigs. The virus appeared to be related to but not identical to the Hendra virus. The Hendra virus was first discovered when it caused a fatal disease in horses in Australia in 1994.
