Probing County Roscommon

Article Abstract:

Archaeologists are beginning to learn about the culture of cottiers, poor Irish farmers, prior to and following the potato famine that struck County Roscommon in Ireland in 1847. Discoveries of redware sherds and other artifacts at two sites of farmers' homes outside Gorttoose suggest the cottiers had more of a material culture than previously thought. Redwares played an important role in the farmers' daily lives. The Famine Museum, opened in 1994, documents much of the Great Potato Famine.
