Egr-1, a master switch coordinating upregulation of divergent gene families underlying ischemic stress

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that early growth response (Egr)-1, a zinc-finger transcription factor, can trigger expression of regulators of coagulation, inflammation and vascular hyperpermeability when activated by ischemia. Animal organ function and survival were enhanced by deleting the gene that encodes Egr-1, as it significantly diminished expression of vascular injury mediators.

Paradoxical rescue from ischemic lung injury by inhaled carbon monoxide driven by derepression of fibrinolysis

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the role of carbon monoxide as a signaling molecule in biological systems, focusing on how CO is synthesized endogenously by heme oxygenase type 1 as a reaction to ischemic stress. The mechanisms by which CO offers protection of ischemic injury are discussed, with particular attention to how CO derepresses the fibrinolytic axis.

The thrombomodulin-protein C system is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Results indicate that thrombomodulin-protein C system controls the growth and survival of trophoblast cells in placenta, which facilitates maintenance of pregnancy in mice. Data suggest that the thrombomodulin-deficient embryos abort due to a tissue factor-initiated activation of the blood coagulation cascade.
