Partial treatment interruption of protease inhibitor - based highly active antiretroviral therapy regimens in HIV-infected children

Article Abstract:

A cohort of 26 perinatally HIV-infected children who discontinued the protease inhibitors (PI) component of their highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) because of difficulties with adherence, toxicity, or virologic breakthrough is presented. Therapy simplification by partial treatment interruption may provide a practical option in patients intolerant of or failing PI-based highly active antiretroviral therapy.
