Participants needed for HIV acute infection study

Article Abstract:

A $6 million National Institutes of Health study of acute HIV infection is failing because of a serious lack of HIV patient participants and physician interest. The AZT-therapy study is intended to answer questions about interruption of viral dissemination after transmission. It is believed that in the first two to 12 weeks after transmission, 1,000 to 10,000 times more viral replication occurs than during later stages of the disease. Identifying candidates has been difficult and the trial will be cancelled if recruitment does not improve.

TB hits more health professionals

Article Abstract:

The incidence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is increasing among inner city health care workers, particularly those infected with the HIV virus. In New York City, 23% of patients diagnosed with TB in 1991 have MDR TB, an increase of 13% from the period between 1982 and 1984. CA, FL, MI, MS, MO and NJ have also reported clusters of MDR TB. HIV-infected people with TB are much more likely to develop active TB than people who have TB, but are not HIV-infected.

HIV vaccines promising, but not problem-free

Article Abstract:

Both preventive and therapeutic vaccines for HIV infections are being investigated, according to speakers at the International Conference on AIDS. Research will require the cooperation of thousands of volunteers, says Dr. Daniel Hoth of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases division on AIDS. Furthermore, these studies involve ethical and legal questions that must be considered by both lay and professional groups.
