Past imperfect
Article Abstract:
Nurses first demonstrated openly against poor working conditions and low pay in November 1937, although they marched with their faces covered to avoid repercussions from their employers. Nurses were unaccustomed to protesting in the 1930s and their fight for better conditions and pay was considered revolutionary. Hospitals sought to give nurses a professional image by making nursing practice menial and keeping wages low so as to detract unintelligent working-class women from seeking to become nurses. The history of campaigns by nurses for better pay is described.

Grades of dispute
Article Abstract:
A review of the history of clinical grading for nurses in the late 1980s in the UK reveals the irony of their unpopularity. Nurses have contested clinical grades at all levels, and in 1989 a study showed that 44% of nurses were considering leaving their jobs because of clinical grading. However, the Conservative government and trade union officials worked for two years from 1985 to develop the grading structure as a response to nursing dissatisfaction with low pay and the lack of rewards for greater responsibilities within the profession.

Struggling for control
Article Abstract:
The first world war, which created a dramatic rise in demand for nurses, put an end to a battle over the registration of nurses in the UK which had been raging for many years. The College of Nursing was formed in 1916, and the Nurses' Registration Act followed in 1919. The conflict over registration created an elitist approach which can still be seen in the modern nursing profession. This is most clearly reflected in the Unison-RCN debate about the role of trained and untrained nurses.
