Patient-to-patient transmission of hepatitis C virus during colonoscopy
Article Abstract:
Two patients were infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) when they received a colonoscopy with instruments that were not properly sterilized. They were a 55-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife, both of whom received the colonoscopy because they had a family history of colon cancer. About 7 months later, they developed hepatitis and tested positive for HCV. A 42-year-old woman known to be HCV-positive had received a colonoscopy on the same day. An investigation revealed that the colonoscopy equipment had not been properly sterilized. All three patients were infected with the same viral isolate.

It is found that greater rates of detection of adenomas among endoscopists who had longer mean times for withdrawal of the colonoscope.
