Phoenix doctors learn some hard lessons about PHOs

Article Abstract:

Physician hospital organizations (PHOs) in Phoenix, AZ, are failing because physicians are not supporting them. The PHOs, which were established to help deal with the competition imposed by managed care, were managed by hospitals. However, although they made profits, physicians did not like having to deal with the multiple levels of bureaucracy. The physicians in Phoenix preferred to be patient advocates.

N.Y. hospital group sues to halt probe of Medicare billing

Article Abstract:

The Greater New York Hospital Assn filed suit against the federal government for its use of Medicare audits. The audits are based on Medicare payment policy that requires residents to have teaching physicians physically present when they treat patients. One aspect of the audits that physicians and hospitals are especially critical of is the threat of triple damages under the False Claims Act.
