Policy paper-chase

Article Abstract:

Reaction is mixed to the UK government's February 1997 green paper on reform in mental health services. Health secretary Stephen Dorrell acknowledges in the paper that failures in mental health care have occurred because of the split between health authorities and local councils and proposes the creation of mental health authorities. Whilst some health professionals believe joint funding would ease problems, many point to the need for more resources rather than another reorganisation.

Crisis, what crisis?

Article Abstract:

UK educational nursing establishments have reported an almost complete take up of nursing courses at the beginning of the school year in 1998, despite constant press coverage suggesting a dramatic fall in nurses due to long working hours and low pay. Some universities and colleges have had to turn people way, while others have deliberately kept back some spaces to accommodate those who have decided later on to train for the nursing profession.

Healing the divisions

Article Abstract:

Nurses in Northern Ireland are hoping the formation of the Northern Ireland Assembly will allow them a greater say in ensuring delivery of health care in the province. A former midwife has been elected as a member of the new assembly and she is seeking to establish care groups which focus on primary care provision. The assembly board consists of a mixture of Catholics and Protestants, which should ensure all parts of society are represented.
