Pollutants in breast milk

Article Abstract:

Breast milk worldwide is commonly contaminated with low levels of pollutants, but this appears to pose little risk to the infant. Data collected from continuous automated literature surveillance and contact with researchers and governmental agency confirm that breast milk worldwide is commonly contaminated with low levels of pesticides and industrial chemicals. Some evidence suggests that relatively low levels of maternal contamination may increase the risk of developmental delay, but mostly through fetal exposure during pregnancy, not breastfeeding. With the exception of actual poisoning, the benefits of breastfeeding continue to far outweigh the risks.

Ethics and midwifery practice

Article Abstract:

Midwives must deal with ethical issues such as abortion, sexually transmitted diseases and a lack of respect for women in many parts of the world. They should do good while doing no harm, and they must promote safety and patient autonomy. Midwives adopted a code of ethics in 1993.
