Article Abstract:

Nurse educators believe an understanding of sociology is vital to nursing practice, with typical sociological material including the sociology of the family and sociology of illness and health. Nursing has conventionally been based on natural science disciplines, while sociological knowledge is multi-paradigmatic. Some nurse educators believe education in sociology can lead to greater autonomy and professionalism for nurses, but this is not necessarily the case.
