Postpartum sexual functioning and its relationship to perineal trauma: a retrospective cohort study of primiparous women

Article Abstract:

Obstetricians should be careful not to damage the perineum when delivering a baby. In a study of 615 women who had just given birth, those with an intact perineum were least likely to have sexual problems six months after childbirth. The perineum is the area between the vagina and rectum.

Emergency peripartum hysterectomy

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women with abnormal adherent placentation may have a higher risk of an emergency hysterectomy following delivery than those without. Abnormal adherent placentation is attachment of the placenta at an unusual place in the uterus. Among 117 women who had an emergency hysterectomy following delivery, 64% had the procedure as a result of abnormal adherent placentation and 21% as a result of decreased uterine tone or strength. The remaining 15% had the procedure for other reasons such as uterine rupture, bacterial infection, fibroids and extension of a uterine scar. Women who had had a previous cesarean section were more likely to have an emergency hysterectomy than those who had not.

Trial of labor after cesarean delivery: the effect of previous vaginal delivery

Article Abstract:

A history of a previous vaginal delivery may determine the chances of delivering faster and vaginally. The duration of labor was 5.6 hours in women who had delivered both vaginally and by cesarean section in the past, but had most recently delivered vaginally. In contrast, women with recent cesarean sections labored for 7.0 hours.
