Predictors of use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) among persons with AIDS in San Francisco, 1996-1999

Article Abstract:

Although the percentage of HIV patients in San Francisco who take highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) increased between 1996 and 1999, many still do not receive this effective treatment. African-Americans, drug addicts, homeless persons, and the uninsured are least likely to take HAART.

Are there gender differences in starting protease inhibitors, HAART, and disease progression despite equal access to care?

Article Abstract:

HIV-positive women are less likely to begin taking AIDS drugs than men, even when the drugs are provided free of charge. This was the conclusion of a study of 1,403 HIV-positive patients of the Southern Alberta HIV Clinic, where all medical care and drugs are provided free of charge.

HAART is neuroprophylactic in HIV-1 infection

Article Abstract:

Highly active antiretroviral therapy may slow the progression of AIDS dementia complex, according to a 10-year study of 1,482 HIV-infected patients. Although the treatment slowed the progression of the complication in most of the patients, a small subgroup did not benefit.
