Prenatal prediction of neonatal outcome in the extremely low-birth-weight infant
Article Abstract:
A combination of gestational age and the fetal abdomen circumference (AC) before birth may best predict which very-low-birthweight newborns are likely to survive without significant disability. As many as half of very small newborns die. Gestational age indicates the degree of fetal development, and AC indicates fetal liver size and relates to fetal nutrition. Researchers studied 155 neonates born weighing 1000 grams or less, and found that survival and overall health were best predicted by fetal age and AC, while estimated fetal weight was not a strong predictor of survival.

Midtrimester urine human chorionic gonadotropin beta-subunit core fragment levels and the subsequent development of preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
Increased blood levels of the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin in pregnant women may be a risk factor for preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy characterized by hypertension and protein in the urine. It is thought to be a disorder of the trophoblast, which is one of the membranes that make up the placenta. A study of 347 pregnant women found that blood levels of human chorionic gonadotropin beta subunit were higher in the women who eventually developed preeclampsia.

The Doppler cerebroplacental ratio and perinatal outcome in intrauterine growth restriction
Article Abstract:
An abnormal cerebroplacental ratio in a fetus may predict potential problems in those who have intrauterine growth restriction. The cerebroplacental ratio compares blood flow in the baby's head to the blood flow in the umbilical artery.
