Preventing postnatal illness

Article Abstract:

A community psychychiatric nurse (CPN) and health visitors (HV) have combined to provide a maternal mental health service in Macclesfield Health Authority, England. HVs received training on postnatal depression (PND), psychological assessment according to the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale screening tool and counselling. The CPN supervises and supports the HVs who screen mothers at six, 12 and 26 weeks after birth. HVs refer mothers with PND to General Practioners who may refer on to the consultant psychiatrist.
