Probable locally acquired mosquito-transmitted Plasmodium vivax infection - Georgia, 1996
Article Abstract:
The case of a farm worker in Georgia illustrates that malaria can be contracted locally. He was admitted to a hospital with fever, chills, fatigue and muscle pain. He had been born in Mexico but not in an area endemic for malaria. However, analysis of blood samples revealed that he had malaria. He had lived in a mobile home park set up for migrant workers. The rooms were open and unscreened and several mosquitoes were found in the trailer. Mosquitoes were also found in a creek close to the trailer park.

Probable Locally Acquired Mosquito-Transmitted Plasmodium vivax Infection--Suffolk County, New York, 1999
Article Abstract:
Two cases are presented of children who contracted malaria in Suffolk County, New York. Neither had traveled to another country and probably got the infection from local Anopheles mosquitoes. These cases represent only the third episode of locally transmitted malaria in New York since 1993 and only the 24th episode in the US since 1985. Before these cases, all of the 7 to 17 cases of malaria per year in Suffolk County were linked to residence in or travel to countries where malaria is common.

Article Abstract:
A trial comparing chloroquine, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, and chlorproguanil-dapsone for the treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria was conducted. Chloroquine was found to be drug of choice but antifolates were observed to be effective.
