Providers debate system fix; patients just confused
Article Abstract:
A number of conflicting views were expressed at a two-day symposium on how to help Medicare beneficiaries best use the system. Each health care group tried to advance its own agenda. For example, executives at the Group Health Association of America, a health maintenance organization association, said that fee-for-service systems were outmoded. However, the American Medical Association, a physicians' group, defended patients' right to choose their own doctors. The conference did little to offer clear-cut direction to beneficiaries who are confused by conflicting health care information.

Group backs $2-a-pack federal excise tax on cigarettes
Article Abstract:
A group of medical organizations support a $2-a-pack excise tax on cigarettes and claim that the tax will dramatically reduce US health care costs. Tobacco use costs the US health care system an estimated $50 billion annually. Some of the group members that support the excise tax include the American Medical Assn, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the City of Hope Medical Center. Recommendations to reduce tobacco use in the US are included.
