Psychiatry's human face

Article Abstract:

Technological developments and the rapid advancements in biomedical research should provide solutions to queries on the causes of mental illness, but mental health nurses should continue to focus on the human experience of mental disorder rather than on the technology used to identify it. The living brain can be examined via brain-imaging techniques and genetic studies are being made, although no significant finds have yet been made in the areas of manic depressive psychosis or schizophrenia. Mental health service users are being increasingly empowered and their opinions called for on care delivery.

It's time to turn the tide

Article Abstract:

The Tidal Model for psychiatric nursing practice is a response to the worsening crisis in UK acute psychiatric care. Problems may be related to organisational changes, financial restrictions, and the use of uneconomic working practices. The Tidal Model being developed by Newcastle Acute Psychiatric Service perceives acute intervention demands as part of the fluid nature of a patient's interaction with concepts including his environment, beliefs and abilities. These needs are central at times but, after being met by acute nursing interventions, care requirements can be passed to other organisations.

Seriously misguided

Article Abstract:

The view that mental health nurses should bow to political and social pressure by focusing their attention of those who are most seriously mentally ill is a very dangerous one. Taking this approach ignores the need for mental health promotion work and makes forms of mental illness other than schizophrenia appear less significant. Mental health nurses should remain aware of the need to develop a wide range of roles and functions.
