Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccination Levels Among Persons [greater than or equal to] Aged 65 Years--United States, 1999
Article Abstract:
Although most elderly people received a flu shot in 1999, many did not receive the pneumococcal vaccine. Pneumococcal infections can be very serious and can be easily prevented because the pneumococcal vaccine can be given at the same time as the flu vaccine.

Public health and aging: influenza vaccination coverage among adults aged >=50 years and pneumococcal vaccination coverage among adults aged >=65 years -- United States, 2002
Article Abstract:
The US is unlikely to reach one of the goals of the Healthy People 2010 report, which is to have 90% of all Americans 50 years and over vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcal infections. In 2002, only 58% of Americans in this age group had been vaccinated against these two infections. Vaccination rates ranged from 42% to 83%, depending on the state and ethnic group.

Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccination Levels Among Adults Aged [equal to or greater than]65 Years--United States, 1997
Article Abstract:
More effort is needed to meet the vaccination goals of Healthy People 2000. One goal is to have 60% or more of all high-risk groups vaccinated against influenza and Streptococcus pneumoniae. These groups include the elderly. A survey of 133,321 people nationwide revealed that 45 states had reached the goal for influenza vaccine but none had reached the goal for pneumococcal vaccine. However, if the increase seen between 1995 and 1997 continues, 28 states would reach the goal for pneumococcal vaccine by the year 2000.
