Public health consequences from hazardous substances acutely released during rail transit-South Carolina, 2005; Selected States, 1999-2004
Article Abstract:
Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system is used to collect and analyze data concerning the public health consequences associated with hazardous-substance-release events that occur in facilities or during transportation. A report describing the event in South Carolina, which is not part of the HSEES system and two others from HSEES and summarizing all rail events reported to HSEES from 16 state health departments during 1999-2004 is presented.

Structural impairments that limit access to health care for patients with disabilities
Article Abstract:
The legal and policy contexts for ensuring physical accessibility to health care facilities and also the potential effects of environmental barriers on patient safety, quality of care and health care worker safety are discussed. The universal design has asserted that designs that work well across functional abilities are likely to perform better for all users.

Health disparities and access to health
Article Abstract:
Studies reveal that racial and ethnic minorities are at greater risk of ill health than their nonminority, nonpoor, better educated peers. Health care and social factors associated with these disparities have related directly to access to health care and hence elimination of these disparities will help in promoting universal access to care.
