Article Abstract:

The debate about public report cards for physicians and hospitals and their role in improving the quality of care, patient safety, and the choices of patients, referring physicians, and organizations that purchase health care is presented. Public report cards could complement nonpublic efforts to improve patient safety and the quality of care if they are accurate, meaningful, and existing information should be verified and selectively audited to correct mistakes and to prevent gaming the system.

The run on Tamiflu-should physicians prescribe on demand?

Article Abstract:

An examination from both the perspective of individual patient-physician encounters and that of public health is presented to suggest whether physicians have obligation to prescribe oseltamivir to patients who request it for a hypothetical outbreak of avian influenza. In contrast to public health perspective, physicians do not have right to prescribe oseltamivir as its inappropriate use would increase the risk that resistant strains of influenza virus would develop.
