Pulling power

Article Abstract:

Successful nursing leaders are those who recognize that the people they lead are those who produce the real results. Leadership must involve encouraging all nursing staff to be prepared to cooperate in reaching goals through teamwork and cohesion. Effective nursing leaders are able to create a staff unit in which people accept assigned roles willingly, are prepared to volunteer, feel able to offer suggestions and express differences in opinion and can work as team members. Leadership needs to promote followership, and followership can in turn promote good leadership.

Who cares?

Article Abstract:

Ancillary workers have a caring role in nursing. They should be accepted as part of a multi-discipliary team. National Vocational Qualifications (NVQS) provide an opportunity for ancillary workers to upgrade their skills. Financial stringencies will result in greater employment of ancillary workers. Nurses should be involved in the development of NVQs to ensure optimum quality of training.

Twelve-hour shifts: helpful or hazardous to patients?

Article Abstract:

The 12-hour shift has been introduced for some nurses. Shifts take the form of regular repeating cycles or irregular duty rotas. Twelve-hour shifts give nurses an extra 45 hours off annually, and have resulted in reduced absenteeism. Article 118a of the European Union treaty could be ratified to outlaw the 12-hour shift.
