Are placebo-controlled clinical trials ethical or needed when alternative treatment exists?
Article Abstract:
There are times when it may be ethical to use a placebo in clinical trials. Placebos are inactive substances that are used to determine whether the drug under study is more effective than no treatment at all. However, patients who receive the placebo are being denied a potentially effective treatment.
