Relationship of race and severity of neonatal illness

Article Abstract:

Caucasian premature babies are more ill when admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit than African-American premature babies. This is paradoxical because African-American babies have twice the mortality rate of Caucasian babies and African-American women have higher rates of premature birth and low birth weight.

Racial differences in the predictive value of the TDx fetal lung maturity assay

Article Abstract:

The ability of a new test to predict which fetuses will be at risk for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) after birth differs depending on race. Lung maturity is evaluated by sampling the amniotic fluid and measuring the ratio between amounts of certain proteins, in the case of this new test, the ratio between surfactant and albumin. The records of 393 nonblack and 87 black infants born prematurely within 72 hours after receiving the new test revealed that black babies were less likely to develop RDS than nonblack babies with the same test value.

Alternative methods of diagnosing gestational diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

A fasting blood sugar level of 105 or greater after an abnormal glucose loading test appears to be accurate in diagnosing diabetes during pregnancy. This would allow women to skip the 3-hour glucose tolerance test, which is time-consuming and expensive.
