Rail safety: Is that it then?

Article Abstract:

Three terrible railway accidents in the UK has focused attention on safety aspects of the rail system and the part played by rail unions and health and safety officers. A safety summit established to examine the issues raised by the accidents highlighted the need for drivers to receive better training and for shorter working hours to be introduced across the system to prevent driver tiredness affecting the safety of the railways.

The safety record of the UK railways industry, following the Hatfield rail accident in October 2000, is examined. The reasons for low standards of rail safety are explored and the need to improve the UK's safety culture is stressed.

Article Abstract:

The UK Fire Brigades Union has objected to the resumption of full services in the channel tunnel because the tunnel operators intend to continue using open-lattice lorry carriages. Dutch 12 year olds can sign an agreement not to smoke before they reach 16 years of age and they will receive a payment of 100 pounds sterling. Research has found that around 25% of new incidents of low back pain in the workplace are due to unhappiness at work. Extensive research has found that the crash of TWA flight 800 on Jul 1996 was most probably due to failure of the plane's mechanics.
