National immunization campaigns (NID) play a vital role in promoting health in countries with a large proportion of mobile ethnic groups. This can be gleaned from Bulgaria's experience with gypsy communities, where an outbreak of poliomyelitis was successfully controlled only after an NID was launched.

The Pan American Health Organization's strategy of using immunization to eradicate poliomyelitis from the Americas paid off in 1991, when only nine case were identified. The success of this initiative demonstrates the many benefits vaccination can offer to society when used properly.
