Reduced Antiretroviral Drug Susceptibility Among Patients With Primary HIV Infection
Article Abstract:
Some strains of HIV are becoming resistant to AIDS drugs and these strains could be transmitted to other people. In a study of 141 people who had recently become infected with HIV and had not received long-term drug treatment, 3 (2%) had viral strains that were resistant to commonly used AIDS drugs. Genetic analysis of the virus revealed mutations in reverse transcriptase and protease that would make the virus resistant to reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors. Thirty-six patients (26%) had viral strains that were less susceptible to AIDS drugs but not completely resistant.

Primary HIV-1 Resistance: A New Phase in the Epidemic?
Article Abstract:
If an HIV patient does not respond to AIDS drugs, it may be necessary to test the virus for drug resistance. Combination drug therapy has been very successful in suppressing the virus to undetectable levels and improving the lives of HIV patients. However, the virus is becoming resistant to some AIDS drugs and these resistant strains can be transmitted. This means a person could be infected with a viral strain that is already resistant to some AIDS drugs. Two 1999 studies found that 2% to 16% of the HIV patients studied had a strain that was resistant to at least one AIDS drug.

Fluoroquinolone Resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Hawaii, 1999, and Decreased Susceptibility to Azithromycin in N. gonorrhoeae, Missouri, 1999
Article Abstract:
The bacterium that causes gonorrhea is becoming resistant to more antibiotics. During the 1980s, it became resistant to penicillin and tetracycline in many areas. It is now resistant to fluoroquinolones in Hawaii, and the Missouri Department of Health reports reduced susceptibility to azithromycin.
