Relation between damage to the placenta and the fetal brain after late-gestation placental embolization and fetal growth restriction in sheep

Article Abstract:

Placental insufficiency will cause growth restriction and brain damage in the fetus, but the extent of brain damage will vary depending on individual variation. This was the conclusion of researchers who studied placental insufficiency in pregnant sheep.

Effects of intrauterine growth restriction on lung liquid dynamics and lung development in fetal sheep

Article Abstract:

Fetal growth restriction prevents the lungs from maturing and this could explain why fetal growth restriction increases the risk of lung disease after birth. This was the conclusion of a study of sheep, which showed that lung growth was proportional to body weight but the production of surfactant was not affected.

Effects of prolonged hypoxemia on fetal renal function and amniotic fluid volume in sheep

Article Abstract:

Low levels of oxygen in the fetus may reduce amniotic fluid levels by intramembranous reabsorption of amniotic fluid rather than by a decrease in fetal urine production. Researchers studied the effect of low levels of oxygen on fetal sheep by measuring fetal urine output and amniotic fluid volume and comparing results to those of sheep fetuses with normal levels of oxygen. Amniotic fluid volume increased in fetuses with adequate oxygenation, but did not increase in fetuses deprived of normal oxygenation. Fetal urine production did not change in the absence of oxygen.
