The International Dietary Energy Consultative Group's Working Group on the role of lifestyle including nutrition for the health of the elderly has highlighted the fact that malnutrition is common among the older elderly. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies should be prevented by enhanced diet, supplementation and use of fortified foods.

The causes of the decline in muscle mass associated with aging may not involve the effects of insulin on protein metabolism. However, research into insulin sensitivity and muscle protein turnover in older people must still be carried out.
