Research changes nurses' view of cancer
Article Abstract:
The Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care Studies at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust, England, conducts research into the problems of cancer patients and the management of these problems. The centre's randomized trial of an approach to the management of breathlessness in lung cancer patients revealed that an approach incorporating counselling, relaxation and breathing training was beneficial. The centre is also investigating other aspects of concern to cancer patients, including factors influencing treatment decisions for elderly patients with colorectal cancer.

Clear passage to A&E
Article Abstract:
The UK Royal College of Nursing's (RCN's) Accident and Emergency (A&E) Nursing Association proposes the launch of a faculty of A&E nursing. The faculty would define A&E nursing practice, provide the educational framework and accreditation for advanced practice in the speciality, and perform research and advisory functions. Some nursing experts are enthusiastic about the model, whilst others believe it does not harmonize with structures and developments in the nursing profession as a whole. The RCN will make a feasibility study of the proposal.

Speaking out
Article Abstract:
Many UK nurses who work only part time find this arrangement very hard to cope with. They are often discriminated against, and are viewed negatively by many managers. Some find it hard to participate in study days, for example, while others are being forced to take shorter discretionary breaks than their full time colleagues. They report that communication about patient care is poor, that they find it hard to attend meetings and that patient handovers vary greatly in quality.
