Resuscitation skills: do nurses need updating?

Article Abstract:

Nurses should regularly update their expertise in carrying out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Research was carried by observation and a questionnaire into nurses' retention of CPR techniques following a three hour course. The experienced nurses, with a mean age of 39.6, came from 19 hospitals. They had previously used CPR between 7 weeks and 24 years. The results directly after their course and 10 weeks later showed that their expertise had improved, but to maintain this improvement updating of skills should occur every 6 to 12 months.

Focus on need

Nurse-led work can be very effective in the treatment of adult survivors of sexual abuse. This has proved the case with a service established by the Foundation NHS Trust, which offers services including training sessions for nursing staff, advice and information for other professionals and research-based intervention. It is vital that nurses be led by patient demand, with particular attention being given to patient requests for specific interventions.
