Romanian adoption: the Manitoba experience
Article Abstract:
Adopted Romanian children may grow and develop normally in nurturing homes. Researchers assessed the growth, behavioral, and medical status of 22 Romanian children adopted by 18 families in Manitoba, Canada on at least two doctor visits. All of the children improved in gross and fine motor skills, and understanding and language skills by the time of their follow-up visit. Children overcame earlier nutritional deficiencies and increased in both height and weight. Abnormal behaviors were still found in eight children (36%) at follow up. Twelve children had infectious diseases, including one with HIV.

Uniform elemental analysis of materials by sputtering and photoionization mass spectrometry
Article Abstract:
Techniques for examining the elemental composition of surfaces usually involve the ablation of atoms or ions from the material's surface and the use of mass spectrometry to detect them. An approach that can achieve a highly uniform, quantitative and sensitive analysis of materials is described. It combines a high-energy (5-keV) ion beam for the sputtering of atoms and a very-high-intensity laser for the multiphoton ionization of the sputtered atoms.
