Safety in sight: put a stop to eye injuries
Article Abstract:
Eye injuries could be totally avoided if only workers would wear eye protection specific to the hazard they're exposed to. Bureau of Labor Statistics records show that 60% of eye injuries are the result of not wearing protective equipment, while 40% of injuries are caused by wearing inappropriate eye protection. The most common hazards to eyesight are sparks, falling objects and chemical splashes. Raising workers' awareness through safety education and training is a major step towards the complete prevention of eye injuries.

Will virtual reality become the standard in safety training?
Article Abstract:
Virtual-reality technology allows workers to train in simulated, three-dimensional work environments without the actual risk. Virtual reality allows users to make decisions in the training environment. The technology also makes trainees experience the tactile sensation of handling specific equipment. Computer-based training systems also eliminate instructor burnout as a concern. The disadvantages of virtual reality includes cost, lack of commercial availability and technical limitations.

Chicago's Deep Tunnel brings safety to light
Article Abstract:
Stringent safety standards were enforced during the construction of Chicago's Deep Tunnel flood control project. The project's proponents, the US EPA and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, exacted strict safety standards from contractors to ensure worker safety during the construction. Standards and procedures were set on forced ventilation, confined-space rescue, tunnel tie-in procedures and sewer inspection.
