School survey highlights teenage problem areas: discovering how young people see their lives was the starting point of work to reduce teenage suicide rates in one trust area
Article Abstract:
Suicide and self inflicted injury rates in South Tees were higher than the national average between 1988 and 1992 and this prompted the South Tees Community and Mental Health NHS Trust to set up a multidisciplinary group to promote mental health amongst adolescents and help them to develop life skills. A survey of local schools found that many childen were concerned about meeting parental expectations and most felt that being able to talk to parents or carers was important. Four main topics to be covered by a resource pack were identified, including self image and esteem, bereavement counselling, family communication and parent and teacher expectations.
