Secrets and spies
Article Abstract:
A retired consultant psychiatrist interviewed numerous health professionals to ascertain how they felt they had been treated by new National Health Service (NHS) managers, and then wrote about their experiences in a book called "Who Cares? True Stories of the NHS Reforms." Most of the interviewees were unhappy with the way managers had misled them, or conspired behind their backs to get rid of them. Many were in tears recounting what had happened. The psychiatrist is sending a copy of his book to the new Labour Party health secretary so that he is aware of the problems.

Article Abstract:
A GP fundholding practice in Cornwall is a pilot site for total fundholding. The practice has reduced its referral rates to secondary care by expanding its mental health team, providing eight new types of service. These include parenting and counselling. A spot purchase fund of 15,000 pounds sterling a year has been set up to purchase social and educational support to stop patients from deteriorating to crisis point.
