Should Patients With Diabetes Drink to Their Health?

Article Abstract:

Alcohol consumption may have health benefits for diabetic patients. Researchers have found that light drinkers have a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and other conditions than non-drinkers. Alcohol also reduces insulin resistance, which may benefit diabetics. The challenge for physicians is to determine which non-drinking patients might benefit from light alcohol consumption. For some patients who do not drink, they have chosen abstinence for fear of losing control or developing alcoholism. Whether or not a patient is diabetic, physicians must consider the potential negative consequences before they recommend a daily drink.

Deaths among railroad trespassers: the role of alcohol in fatal injuries

Article Abstract:

Alcohol may play a role in deaths among people who loiter around train tracks and are hit by an oncoming train. Researchers analyzed the 224 railroad-related deaths in North Carolina between 1990 and 1994. A total of 128 people who died had been trespassing on railroad property. Ninety-four percent were men and the majority of fatal accidents occurred at night or on weekends. Most of the people killed had been lying, standing or walking on or near the tracks. Eighty-two percent tested positive for alcohol use at the time of death and 78% had blood alcohol levels greater than 100 milligrams per deciliter.

Should Patients With Heart Disease Drink Alcohol?

Article Abstract:

Most patients with heart disease who already drink moderate amounts of alcohol should be encouraged to continue. Several studies have shown that moderate alcohol consumption can lower the risk of heart disease and even lower mortality rates among patients with existing disease. However, all patients should be cautioned not to drink excessively.
