Spirit of the beehive

Article Abstract:

Research suggests that propolis, which is a resinous substance produced by bees from leaf buds and tree barks, has antibacterial properties. A Romanian study found a propolis solution effective in the healing of burns in guinea pigs and a Russian trial found that some microbes, which were resistant to other antibiotics, were sensitive to propolis. Researchers in Poland concluded that propolis has a range of other healing properties as well as its bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties. A UK researcher claims that propolis has a synergistic effect on other antibiotics.

Reading matters

Article Abstract:

Nursing Times' recommendation for a national inquiry into nursing colleges library services has been rejected by the United Kingdom Central Council. It is satisfied that the National Boards are addressing problems of unsatisfactory stocks, loan periods and opening hours. Despite criticisms by student nurses the Boards maintain they have improved services with increased stocks and employment of qualified librarians. However, some concede increasing demand exceeds provision.

Outsiders find it particularly difficult to understand the acronyms and shorthand of the professionals such as administrators, researchers, nurses and social workers. Interprofessional communication frequently fails, claim some academics, with administrative boundaries also at fault.
